TODAY IS MY FIFTH DAY AS YOUR AS YOUR SUPERINTENDENT AND I.

I VISITED IN MY TIME HERE, THE DISTRICT OFFICE STAFF, THE DISTRICT OFFICE DEPARTMENTS.

I'VE SEEN SEEN AROUND I'VE BEEN AT EL DORADO HIGH SCHOOL, AND I MET WITH SOME OF OUR 2754 EMPLOYEES.

I HAVE A LOT MORE TO GO, BUT I'M GRATEFUL FOR THE WARM WELCOME FROM THE BOARD.

AND SO I SPENT MY TIME HERE TALKING WITH EMPLOYEES, SEEING SEEING THE PLACES, BUT REALLY JUST TRYING TO GET TO KNOW WHAT PYLE USED IS ABOUT AND LOOKING AT OUR DISTRICT OFFICE AND THE SERVICES THEY PROVIDE.

AND IN EL DORADO, SOME OF THE PROGRAMS WERE SUPPORTING STUDENTS EXTRA ASSISTANCE.

SO EVEN IN MY SHORT TIME HERE, EVEN IN FIVE DAYS, YOU CAN TELL THAT PYLE USD IS A ONE OF A KIND PLACE.

IT'S TRULY REMARKABLE.

EVERY ONE OF THE EMPLOYEES I'VE SPOKEN WITH HAVE SHOWN ME THAT THEY ARE VERY PROUD OF WHERE THEY WORK AND THEY LOVE THE IDEA THAT THEY'RE CARRYING OUT OUR MISSION.

THE REASON WE EXIST AND THE P P VALUES ADVANTAGE.

THEY KNOW THEIR JOBS IN AND OUT, BUT MORE THAN THAT, THEY CARE PROFOUNDLY ABOUT THIS ORGANIZATION.

OUR EMPLOYEES CARE ABOUT OUR STUDENTS, THEIR WELL-BEING AND THEIR SUCCESS.

OUR EMPLOYEES CARE ABOUT OUR FAMILIES AND OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND THE ROLE THEY PLAY.

OUR EMPLOYEES OUR EMPLOYEES CARE ABOUT A SAFE, RESPECTFUL AND ENGAGED ENVIRONMENT.

AND ONE OF THE WAYS I TELL THAT, AND THIS MAY SEEM SILLY TO YOU, BUT PERHAPS IT'S THE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL IN ME, I CAN'T GET OVER THE QUALITY OF THE FACILITIES IN OUR DISTRICT. EVERYTHING IS CLEAN, EVERYTHING'S TAKEN CARE OF, EVERYTHING IS ORGANIZED.

AND WHEN THINGS ARE THIS CLEAN, YOU CAN TELL THAT NOT ONLY IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT BUT IN A HOME AS WELL.

THERE'S NOT JUST PEOPLE DOING THEIR JOB.

IT'S HAVING GREAT PRIDE IN THEIR JOB.

I THAT TO ME TELLS ME SO MUCH ABOUT WHO WE ARE AND WHO OUR EMPLOYEES ARE.

OUR EMPLOYEES CARE DEEPLY ABOUT ALL THE SUCCESS AND THEY DEMONSTRATE THAT BY I'VE MET SO MANY PEOPLE WHO ARE EMPLOYEES HERE AND THEY LIVE WITHIN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT BORDERS. THEY SEND THEIR CHILDREN TO OUR SCHOOLS, THEY SEND THEIR GRANDCHILDREN TO OUR SCHOOLS.

THEY WENT TO OUR SCHOOLS.

THEY'RE VERY PROUD OF OUR THEIR ALUMNI STATUS WITH US AND THE FACT THAT MAYBE THEIR PARENTS WENT TO SCHOOL HERE AS WELL.

OUR EMPLOYEES AND I ALREADY KNOW THIS AND I KNOW I'LL HEAR IT AGAIN AND AGAIN.

I'VE LEARNED THAT THERE'S A SAYING IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, I KNOW IT'S ON SOME EMAIL SIGNATURES AND I HOPE IT'S ON MINE TOO.

SO TONIGHT'S BOARD REPORT, I'D LIKE TO JUST ASSURE ALL THE PARENTS IN OUR DISTRICT.

AS A DISTRICT, WE'RE STILL CONTINUING TO LOOK FOR WAYS TO IMPROVE ALL THE MENTAL HEALTH FOR OUR STAFF, FOR OUR TEACHERS, AND AS FAR AS OUR STUDENTS AS WELL.

AND WE'RE ALSO TRYING TO REINFORCE CONCERNS, AS YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN WATCHING THE NEWS OVER THE PAST MONTH, WE'VE HAD SCHOOL ISSUES, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO SAFETY.

SO WE ARE REVISITING THAT, MAKING SURE THAT THAT OUR SCHOOLS ARE SAFE BECAUSE FRANKLY, YOUR KIDS ARE OF GREAT IMPORTANCE TO US AND WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE PROVIDE AS MUCH SAFETY AS AS POSSIBLE.

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO WELCOME DR.

MATTHEWS. I KNOW THIS IS HIS FIRST BOARD MEETING, AND I AM PRETTY CURIOUS TO REALIZE IF IF IF HE'S REALIZED THAT WE ARE VERY CHARISMATIC, PASSIONATE AND SOMETIMES CHALLENGING SCHOOL DISTRICT.

PARENTS JUST WANT TO REMIND YOU THAT NOTHING I'M TELLING YOU IS IS NEW, BUT YOU ARE IN THE FOREFRONT OF BEING YOUR CHILD'S ADVOCATE.

SO AS A TRUSTEE IN YOUR DISTRICT, I APPRECIATE ALL OF THE ALL THE EMAILS THAT I'M RECEIVING.

AND I'M TRYING TO GET BACK TO YOU GUYS AS FAR AS READING THESE THINGS AND PUTTING SOME OF THESE THINGS INTO PLAY.

WE DO HAVE AN AMAZING STAFF HERE IN THE DISTRICT THAT ARE ALSO DOING WORK BEHIND THE SCENES.

MATHEWS. WE HAD A GREAT BOARD MEETING ON MONDAY AND I'M TRYING TO KEEP HIM UP TO DATE WITH THE GOOD FOOD PLACES IN THE AREA.

SO I, I GUESS I'LL TOUCH ON THE END THING WITH THE MILITARY DEAL THAT I DID, BUT THAT ALSO COULD TIE INTO, I GUESS, SCHOOLS ACROSS AMERICA, BUT MAYBE HOW TO IMPLEMENT SOME EXCITEMENT FOR SPORTS PROGRAMS AMONG OUR YOUTH.

BUT FIRST OF ALL, I'VE HAD SEVERAL MEETINGS THIS MONTH, AND I'VE HAD SOME PARENTS REACH OUT TO ME CONCERNED THAT KIDS ARE APPROACHING UPPER ELEMENTARY GRADES THAT CANNOT READ.

THEY CAN READ, BUT THEY'RE READING BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC.

THEY'RE BEHIND AND THEY ARE STRUGGLING.

AND THERE ARE SOME PARENTS WHO BELIEVE HALF THE CLASS ISN'T WHERE THEY SHOULD BE.

ONE SCHOOL IN PARTICULAR HAS REACHED OUT TO ME WITH THIS CONCERN.

AND AS I'VE SPOKEN WITH TEACHERS AND PARENTS ACROSS THE DISTRICT, IT SEEMS THAT WE HAVE SOME SCHOOLS, CLASSROOM AND KIDS THAT END UP GETTING A DIFFERENT READING EXPERIENCE THAN OTHERS. SO I WAS WONDERING IF THE DISTRICT COULD PLEASE SHARE WITH US HOW WE ARE APPROACHING READING AND LITERACY IN K THROUGH 12 AND BEING ON THE SAME PAGE AS A DISTRICT IS SO IMPORTANT.

SINCE I'VE RUN FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD, I SAID, ALWAYS SAID I WANTED TO SEE US GET BACK TO THE BASICS.

HAVING A CLEAR A CLEAR PLAN FOR HOW OUR STUDENTS READ AND ENGAGE WITH LITERACY IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW WE GET BACK TO BASICS.

I KNOW WE HAVEN'T HAD A LOT OF DATA GO OFF WITH THE PANDEMIC TO GO OFF OF WITH THE PANDEMIC.

BUT I'M WONDERING IF WE ARE DOING ALL WE CAN AS A DISTRICT TO ENSURE OUR KIDS ARE NOT ONLY COMPETENT READERS, BUT ALSO COMPETITIVE READERS.

WE HAVE A COMMUNITY WHO ARE VERY SUPPORTIVE OF OUR EXCELLENT TEACHERS AND WE SHOULD BE LEADING IN THIS COUNTY.

IT IS UNCLEAR TO OUR COMMUNITY HOW WE ARE BUILDING THE LITERACY SKILLS OF OUR STUDENTS AS THEY PROGRESS THROUGHOUT THEIR SCHOOLING EXPERIENCE.

AND SO IF WE CAN SEE SOME EXAMPLES AND MAYBE SOME NEW PROGRAMS TO GET OUR KIDS BACK ON TRACK AS READING IS SO, SO IMPORTANT.

THE LAST BOARD MEETING, I ASKED ABOUT PACING GUIDES AND IF OUR DISTRICT HAS THEM, AND I ALSO ASKED ABOUT OUR GRADING POLICIES.

I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE RESPONSES.

I KNOW WE HAVE A NEW SUPERINTENDENT AND I'M GIVING HIM THE TIME AND THE SPACE TO ASK THESE QUESTIONS FOR OUR REQUESTS.

HOWEVER, I DO BELIEVE THAT IN THESE TWO AREAS, IF WE ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT EQUITY IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, WE DEFINITELY NEED ACTION IN THESE AREAS.

ANOTHER ITEM PARENTS HAVE SPOKEN TO ME ABOUT IS WHEN SIGNING UP THEIR STUDENTS FOR HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER CAMPS.

THEY HAVE SPOKEN OF THE FRUSTRATION OF NOT BEING ABLE TO PAY FOR THEIR ATHLETES AND THEIR CAMP ONLINE USING A CREDIT OR DEBIT CARD.

INSTEAD, THEY DO ALL THE PAPERWORK ONLINE, THEN HAVE TO PHYSICALLY TAKE A CHECK OR MONEY ORDER TO DISTRICT PERSONNEL AT THE CASTLE ADDRESS.

I WAS WONDERING IF THIS IS SOMETHING WE CAN OFFER OUR PARENTS FOR THE FUTURE.

SOMETIMES THE KIDS, THE FRUSTRATION WITH SOME OF THE PARENTS WAS AND JUST LISTENING IN SOME BOOSTER MEETINGS IS THAT EVERYBODY GETS SIGNED UP AND THEN THE MONEY IS LATE BECAUSE PARENTS WORK AND SO SOMETIMES THE OFFICE IS CLOSED.

SO I WAS JUST WONDERING IF THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING WE COULD OFFER OUR PARENTS IN THE FUTURE.

AND THEN ONE MORE THOUGHT THAT I HAD WE'VE HAD I HAD SEVERAL MEETINGS WITH PARENTS REGARDING IEPS AND THEIR FRUSTRATION WITH THE IEP PROCESS. THEY FEEL THAT SOMETIMES WHEN THEY GO IN FOR THEIR IEP MEETING OR THEIR FIRST MEETING, THAT THEY NEED MORE INFORMATION.

THEY DON'T FEEL PREPARED AND THEY JUST FEEL LIKE THEY DON'T HAVE A LOT OF REPRESENTATION IN THE PROCESS.

AND MANY OF OUR PARENTS HAVE HIRED ATTORNEYS OR HAVE REACHED OUT AND HAVE TO HIRE SOME TYPE OF ADVOCATE TO GET THROUGH THIS.

I WAS WONDERING IF THERE IS ANY POSSIBLE WAY WE CAN PROVIDE ADVOCATES FOR OUR PARENTS OR PROVIDE INFORMATIVE MEETINGS WITH A REPRESENTATIVE FROM OUR DISTRICT PRIOR TO THE IEP TO INFORM THE PARENTS AND HELP THEM PREPARE FOR THE MEETINGS.

IN FACT, IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO ASK A TEACHER TO KEEP TRACK OF WHAT IS BEING OFFERED VIA IRONY BECAUSE IT'S A DIGITAL MEDIA PREPARED OFF SITE TO WHICH EACH SCHOOL HAS NO SAY IN WHAT IS AVAILABLE TO THEIR STUDENTS.

YOU MIGHT BE THINKING, NO, THAT'S NOT TRUE.

WE'VE BROUGHT THIS TO YOUR ATTENTION SEVERAL TIMES, AND THE ANSWER THAT WE GET IS ALWAYS THE SAME.

THAT I READ IS USED EXCLUSIVELY FOR ASSESSMENT.

UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, I FOUND OUT THAT OTHER FIFTH GRADE CLASSES WERE ACQUIRING 45 MINUTES PER WEEK PER SUBJECT.

AND TO BE CLEAR, THESE WERE NOT ASSESSMENTS.

THEY WERE ASSIGNMENTS.

SO I WOULDN'T BRING UP A PROBLEM WITHOUT PROVIDING A SOLUTION.

AND I WOULD REALLY HOPE THAT YOU LOOK INTO LEXI PHONICS AND POWER UP LITERACY.

THEY ARE GREAT PROGRAMS THAT HELP TEACH, BUT THEY HELP.

THEY HAVE MORE CONTENT CONTROL.

AND JUST TO RECAP, STUDENTS HATE IT.

IT'S EXPENSIVE. WE'RE NOT USING IT IN THE MANNER THAT THE DISTRICT PROMISED.

AND THAT TEACHER TOOK IT AMONGST THEMSELVES TO LIKE TAKE CARE OF IT.

BUT THAT STILL TOOK TO CHRISTMAS BREAK.

SO MY JUNIOR CHILD IS NOW REPEATING CLASSES GOING INTO NEXT YEAR BECAUSE HE FAILED CLASSES.

HE SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN. IT ABSOLUTELY SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN IT.

WHEN WE TALK ABOUT THE KIDS ARE BEHIND, I HAVE A SECOND GRADER.

EVALUATIONS ARE CONDUCTED EACH YEAR FOR ALL EMPLOYEE GROUPS, ALL TYPES OF EMPLOYEES.

AND I CAN PROVIDE DETAILS IN A FUTURE REPORT BECAUSE IT DOES VARY A LITTLE BIT DEPENDING ON THEIR LENGTH OF SERVICE.
